Translation (English)

מִרְיָם קִבְּלָה תּוֹרָה מִסִּינַי
וּמְסָרַתָּהּ לִבְנוֹת צְלָפְחָד
וּבְנוֹת צְלָפְחָד לִדְבוֹרָה,
וּדְבוֹרָה לְרוּת,
וְרוּת מְסָרַתָּהּ לִבְרוּרְיָה
הֵן אָמְרוּ שְׁלֹשָׁה דְּבָרִים:
הַשְׁמִיעוּ אֶת קוֹלְכֶן
וְהַעֲמִידוּ תַּלְמִידוֹת הַרְבֵּה
וַעֲשׂוּ דְּרָשׁ לַתּוֹרָה.

Miriam received the Torah from Sinai
and transmitted it to the Daughters of Zelopheḥad,
and the Daughters of Zelopheḥad to Deborah,
and Deborah to Ruth,
and Ruth transmitted it to Beruriah.
They said three things:
Make your voice heard,
raise up many disciples
and interpret the Torah.

This presentation of the lineage of the Mesorah, from Miriam the prophet to Beruriah the sage, parallels the well-known opening to the first chapter of Pirqei Avot (which only includes a patriarchal lineage). I hope there will be more maxims forthcoming. Rabbi Lior Nevo (translation)

Rabbi Lior Nevo serves as a chaplain at Hebrew SeniorLife, in the Greater Boston Area. She grew up in Jerusalem, Israel, and has a bachelor’s degree in Bible and Jewish Thought from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She got her master’s degree in Pluralistic Jewish Education in a joint program of Hebrew University and Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. In 2015 Lior was ordained as a rabbi at HUC-JIR in Jerusalem.
